ShareGate is a migration and management suite for SharePoint and Microsoft 365 — best known for tenant-to-tenant migration and content management. This page is not about that. It answers a much narrower question that sometimes brings people to ShareGate by accident: if all I need is to see what we're sharing externally, is there a focused tool for just that?
Scoping the question
If your project is a migration — moving or restructuring content across tenants or sites — ShareGate is a category leader and this comparison isn't the one for you. But "ShareGate" also gets typed into a search box by people who only want the sharing audit: the external who-can-access-what picture, reviewed on a cadence. For that one job, a migration suite is a large tool to buy and run.
The narrow question: the external sharing audit
TRACER365 does one thing: it audits external sharing across SharePoint and OneDrive — anonymous links, guest grants, inherited access, group access, pending invitations — and presents it as a de-duplicated, severity-ranked, reviewable list. It does not migrate, provision, or manage anything.
Side by side (for the audit use case)
| ShareGate | TRACER365 | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Migration & management suite for SharePoint and Microsoft 365 | Focused external-sharing audit across SharePoint and OneDrive |
| Mode | Read-write: it migrates, provisions, and manages content | Read-only: it audits and changes nothing in the tenant |
| The sharing audit | One capability inside a broad suite | The entire product — deduplicated and severity-ranked |
| Cost shape | Priced as a migration & management suite | A fraction of that — $490/yr flat, per installation, published openly |
| Audience | Migration engineers & SharePoint administrators | IT + business reviewers (viewer role, scheduled email reports) |
When ShareGate is the right call
Honestly: if you are migrating content between tenants, consolidating sites, or restructuring a SharePoint estate, that is real work a purpose-built migration suite does well — and ShareGate is one of the established names for it. TRACER365 does none of that. It cannot move a file or change a permission; it is a read-only audit. If your need is a migration or an ongoing management platform, buy the suite.
When the focused tool wins
- The job is the audit, not the migration. You want the external sharing picture — complete, ranked, reviewable — and nothing more.
- You want the noise gone. Inherited duplicates collapse under their cause; see the inherited guest access explainer for why that matters.
- Read-only is a feature. The audit runs locally with verifiable read-only scopes, and its data never leaves your environment.
- Cost that matches the job. A focused audit shouldn't cost what a migration platform costs. For other focused-versus-broad comparisons, see our take on ManageEngine SharePoint Manager Plus and AdminDroid.
